2024 Annual Meeting Layouts


A number of local PRRT&HS members have graciously invited us to view their personal layouts. Here, we present them to you with descriptions and some pictures. We hope that you will take the opportunity to get to see them in person.


In deference to our members' privacy, we are not providing addresses here, but they will be available at the registration desk at the meeting.


State College-area Layouts

View Wednesday at various times between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm

Jerry Lauchle - Galeton & Chestnut Lake                                              

Summary: HO Scale | Shortline | Freelanced | North-Central PA | 16'x20' | DCC-NCE

Hours: Wednesday Afternoon: 1-3PM

Access: Stairs to Basement

Description: Recently featured in the February 2024 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman; layout depicts the 1945 - 1955 era of railroading in north-central Pennsylvania. The layout is finely detailed focused on the historic timber and coal industries of Pennsylvania.


John Kocet - Appalachian Railway Company - Norton District - Norton Joint Line

Summary: HO Scale | Mainline | Freelanced | Appalachian | 23'x40' | DCC-NCE | Double-Decked

Hours: Wednesday Afternoon: 1-4PM

Access: Stairs to basement

Description: Layout is well scenic depicting a double-tracked mainline (320' run) through the Appalachian region featuring joint operations between the B&O, C&O, and N&W during the 1940s-1960s timeframe.


Lee Rainey - PRR/EBT (Mount Union, PA)

Summary: S/Sn3 Scale | Junction | PRR/EBT | Mount Union, PA | 12'x26' | DCC-LENZ

Hours: Wednesday Afternoon: 1-3PM

Access: Stairs to Basement

Description: Most trackwork (hand laid) (from fast tracks) is in place, and scenery and buildings are well underway. Photo backdrops of actual scenes and countryside. Staging Yards representing Altoona & Enola. Walk in design, two crews (1 PRR shifting Crew, 1 EBT shifting crew, and several other jobs. Shifting focus vs. Mainline running. Diverse PRR motive power.


Lee Rainey - Track Plan


Jack Basiago - East Penn Railroad

Summary: HO Scale | Regional | Freelance | Modern | DCC JMRI

Hours: Wednesday Afternoon: 1-3PM

Access: Stairs to Basement

Description: The layout covers 7 small towns with a couple of industries in each. The trackage is a single main line with passing sidings in every town. There are two yards and a loop back, but no circular route. All track has block detection and switches can be controlled remotely. Scenery work is on-going.

ALTO Model Train Museum Association - Various Layouts

Summary: Various (O, HO, S, & N) | Mainline & Branchlines | Various Roads | Various Locations

Hours: Friday Night - 7:00 - 9:30 PM

Access: Single Story with steps

Description: The club has assembled various layouts of multiple scales including an HO-Scale triple-tracked layout featuring Horseshoe Curve.


Altoona Association of Model Railroaders - Allegheny Central & BT&E Railroads

Summary: HO Scale | Mainline | 20'x50', N Scale | Shortline | 15'x30’, Both: Freelanced, Central PA, Digitrax DCC

Hours: Friday Night - 7:30-10:30PM

Access: 1st Floor at parking lot level, Stairs to 2nd Floor

Description:

1st Floor: BT&E, N-Scale, single-track main, operations based with several communities, industries, yards, and plenty of scenery.

2nd Floor: Allegheny Central, HO-Scale, double-track main, city, town, industries, plenty of scenery

Walls display several railroad artifacts including a substantial collection of PRR builder's plates and number boards."


Bricktown Model Railroaders Association - PRR & EBT

Summary: HO & HOn3 Scale | Mainline/Shortline | PRR/EBT | Mount Union/EBT Mainline | 20'x50' (currently)

Hours: Friday Night - 7:00 - 10:00 PM

Access: Single Story with access ramp.

Description: An ambitious undertaking to model the PRR Mainline from Mount Union to Gallitzin & the EBT from Mount Union to Saltillo. Bench and track work complete on the EBT from Mount Union to Three Springs and PRR Main from Mount Union to Huntingdon with a temporary end loop advancing as the members make their way west. Scenery is ongoing with several structures complete on the layout.


Gary Nastase - The Forks Ridge Railway

Summary: HO Scale | Mainline/Branchline | Proto-Freelanced | 1966 | NCE-DCC

Hours: Friday - 2PM - 8PM

Access: Stairs to basement

Description: A double-tracked mainline (150' run) serving several heavy industries common to Pennsylvania including coal mining, cement, quarries, brick kilns, petroleum depot, and a quarry along with staging yards.



Portage Station Museum - Miniature Mainline

Summary: HO Scale | Prototypical | South Fork to Altoona/Duncansville| 13'x16' | DC

Hours: Friday - 12 - 9PM

Access: Stairs to 2nd Floor

Description: Mainline of the PRR lines over the Alleghenies. Half the layout features famous locations on the west slope including; Gallitzin, Portage, and South Fork. Half the layout depicts the east slope including the Horseshoe Curve, downtown Altoona, New Portage Branch, Muleshoe Curve & WYE Switches. The layout is in a historic Pennsylvania Railroad Station with many artifacts preserved from the era.
